New accessible facilities now available in Kings Park

People with disability and their carers who visit Kings Park, Perth can now access a $177,939 Changing Place facility, jointly funded by the Botanic Gardens and Parks Authority and the Department of Communities, which provides a safe and fully accessible toilet and change facility.

The Changing Place is part of the existing toilets next to the popular adventure play and picnic area at the Saw Avenue parkland, which is also designed to be accessible for children and adults with disabilities.

The facility includes an electronically operated ceiling hoist and change table and an automatic door secured with a Master Locksmiths Access Key. This provides access only to eligible users and their carers ensuring the facilities are safe and clean for those who need them.

This will help to ensure that everyone in the community has appropriate bathroom facilities to meet their needs while enjoying a day in Kings Park, improving the quality of their lives.

The new Changing Place facility is one of 100 similar facilities now available across Australia with 31 in Western Australia.

The State Government has provided $2 million to support the establishment of Changing Places across WA to improve the accessibility of a variety of venues and services for Western Australians with disability.

Disability Services Minister Stephen Dawson noted: "Kings Park is a top tourism and recreational destination in Western Australia and this facility significantly improves amenities for people with disability to ensure they can experience this much-loved community resource.

"The growing network of Changing Places ensures people with disability have increased options to travel around and engage in recreation activities across the State.

"Changing Places gives people with disability the confidence to travel and enjoy time away from home with family and friends without worrying about whether access to facilities will be an issue."
