Netball recognised for leadership role

Netball's role in creating a fair, safe and inclusive environment for all players has been recognised with the Sports Leadership honour at the Australian Migration and Settlement Awards.

Netball Australia accepted the award on behalf of the sport's governing body and its eight state and territory associations at a gala function at Parliament House in Canberra on Monday 24th March.

Netball Australia's Community Engagement Manager Julia Symons said it was "incredibly exciting" for the sport to be recognised with such a prestigious award.

She added "this award is not just about Netball Australia's efforts – this recognition celebrates the efforts of our eight state and territory member organisations and their grassroots programs that introduce the sport of netball to new and emerging communities every day.

"For a young girl who has recently arrived in Australia, involvement in a sport like netball can help her to build connections within the community, develop her self-confidence, give her friendships, and enable her to have fun in a safe and inclusive environment.

"Netball Australia and our eight state and territory members are committed to creating such an environment for anyone who wants to get involved in our sport, as a player, coach, umpire, administrator, volunteer or fan."

Australia Post has also recently announced its support of Netball Australia's One Netball Community Engagement Program as part of its Our Neighbourhood National Community Partnerships.

Through this partnership, the netball community will be engaged and empowered to establish connections with new communities and participants, to encourage long-term involvement in the sport.

Symons concluded "netball in Australia is committed to social change, strengthening and building capacity in communities, and empowering women and girls."
