Move Moira Get Active initiative returns in 2024

The Move Moira Get Active initiative is returning in April 2024 offering the Moira Shire community an opportunity to enjoy a month-long celebration of active living.

The campaign - a partnership with Moira Shire Council, NCN Health and Yarrawonga Health - encourages community members of all ages and abilities to prioritise their health by incorporating just 30 minutes of movement into their daily routines.

John Tanner, Chair of the Panel of Administrators for Moira Shire Council shared “together we can create a healthier, more vibrant community. We want to empower our residents to find joy in movement and embrace a healthier lifestyle.

“Whether it’s trying a new sport, supporting local clubs, or simply taking a walk in the park, every little bit counts. Residents can find a full calendar of events for Active April on Council’s website, including the four free community event day.”
NCN Health Manager Health Promotion and Community Development Jenny Burrows said she hoped all ages and abilities would take advantage of what is on offer during Active April.

Burrows added “participating in Active April fosters a culture of wellness and physical activity within the community, making us all happier and healthier. Active April offers benefits for people of all ages, including physical health, mental wellbeing, and social connection. We hope that by participating this month you will be reminded of the many active opportunities in our region that are great fun and good for you.”

Yarrawonga Health Interim Chief Executive Robin Haberecht explains how the Move Moira event in Yarrawonga will support children throughout Moira.

“We know our Respond survey in 2023 showed that only 23.4% of children in the Moira Shire completed 60 minutes of physical activity 5 days a week. This was 34% less than in 2019. As a community – we need to do everything we can to ensure that the next generation get the best start in life. And living a healthy lifestyle is a key pillar of that. I’m excited to see hundreds of kids from all over the region getting active on the 4th at Sacred Heart Primary. Our Health Promotion team is busy ensuring the day will be fun-packed and full of opportunities to learn how to improve their health and regular exercise.”

The community are invited to attend four fun-filled, free community events across the region to celebrate the Active April initiative. Connect with local groups and clubs and enjoy the benefits of being active.
