More 'iconic events' for Sydney?

The NSW Government says it is in negotiations to bring the Goodwood Festival of Speed, MotoGP and Superbikes racing to Sydney.

In an interview with Australian Sponsorship News, NSW Minister for Major Events, Ian Macdonald, said his priorities are to bring "more iconic events into Sydney and NSW."

Minister Macdonald, who has been in the job only six weeks, also has the Red Bull Air Race and "some boating options" in his sights.

The Minster said that Sydney was ready to host night-time events to help global television audiences watch Australia-based events at credible times of the day, stating âI think we can meet some of the requirements that are becoming increasingly important for events in this part of the world if they've got a global audience, and that is that they be held at night."

However, the NSW Government is likely to face hostility from other states concerned over having events they have developed 'poached' by NSW.

Industry insiders have expressed regret that Minister Macdonald is not looking for NSW to develop new events or attract events from competing nations.
