Monash Council partners to deliver Australian-first sport and recreation work program to young people with a disability
Monash Council is partnering to deliver an Australian-first program - the Integrated Practical Placement (IPP) program - for the sport, leisure and recreation sector which will deliver valuable work experience and practical skills and training to young people living with a disability.
The IPP program is a partnership between Monash Council’s Active Monash team, Holmesglen Institute and WISE Employment that brings the classroom to the workplace for students who want to study and gain employment in sport.
The partnership builds on the success of Holmesglen Institute’s award-winning IPP programs at the Royal Melbourne and Royal Children’s Hospitals. Holmesglen Institute won the 2019 Victorian and Australian Training Awards for its pioneering IPP program with Royal Children’s Hospital.
Active Monash will host program participants at its sites across the City of Monash – Oakleigh Recreation Centre, Clayton Aquatic and Health Club and Monash Aquatic and Recreation Centre.
City of Monash Mayor Brian Little is thrilled that this program is being provided through Monash’s popular recreation centres and added “Monash Council has a commitment to inclusive and equitable employment opportunities and this program expands that commitment.
“Supporting young people to gain skills, qualifications and confidence to transition into paid employment is more important than ever and I’m proud that Monash is leading the way with this fantastic opportunity.”
School leavers or young job seekers up to 21 years of age with a disability are eligible for this program. Students will achieve qualifications during the year to kick-start their sport and recreation career including:
• (22302VIC) Certificate I in Work Education
• AUSTSWIM Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety
• Lifesaving Victoria Pool Lifeguard Award
• Senior First Aid and CPR
• Sports-based coaching and umpiring courses.
Enrolments for the 2021 program are open. Applications close on 11th December 2020. For more information on the program or to apply visit holmesglen.edu.au/ipp.
