Melbourne to spend $363 million to keep Australian Open
The Government of Victoria is to spend $363 million on a redevelopment of Melbourne Park venue for the Australian Open in a bid to keep the tournament until 2036.
Agence France Presse reports that the venue will become the first Grand Slam venue to boast three roofed courts. Other developments will include the addition of an extra 1,500 seats to the Margaret Court Arena, the court which is to be roofed, and the building of a new plaza with 21 courts.
âThe world's best players love coming to Melbourne and our significant investment in Melbourne Park will guarantee the Australian Open remains in Melbourne until at least 2036,? said Victorian State Premier John Brumby.
Melbourneâs current contract to host the Grand Slam event runs out in 2016, and there are fears that it could be poached by another wealthy city. Shanghai, Dubai, Madrid and Sydney have all expressed interest in having the event.
