Melbourne sports clubs dump EnergyWatch as sponsor
Victorian sports clubs Melbourne Victory, Melbourne Rebels and the Melbourne Football Club have each dumped EnergyWatch as a sponsor after its co-owner posted a litany of racist and sexist comments on Facebook.
Ben Polis, Chief Executive and co-owner of EnergyWatch was revealed to have made dozens of offensive remarks about Aborigines, Asians, women and Prime Minister Julia Gillard on Facebook.
In an announcing that they were cutting ties with EnergyWatch, the Demons said Polis's comments were "disgraceful and abhorrent'' adding "the Club has terminated these sponsorships, effective immediately."
The embarrassment could not have come at a worse time for the Demons who have been embroiled in a separate race row involving allegations aired by former St Kilda coach Grant Thomas that Melbourne's indigenous players were upset about being treated differently to white teammates by coach Mark Neeld.
EnergyWatch's sponsorship is believed to be worth $2 million a year to the Demons.
