Melbourne City and Federation University partner to launch new sports course

Federation University Australia and Melbourne City Football Club have teamed up to launch a new Diploma of Business and Sports Management course helping graduates kick off a career in sport.

The 12-month course has been developed in partnership with Melbourne City’s Institute of Sport and Business (MCISB), combines theory and hands-on learning at the club’s state-of-the-art training facility at Casey Fields, located a short drive from Federation University’s Berwick Campus.

In this elite sporting environment, students will be surrounded by industry experts and professionals from Melbourne City FC and the wider City Football Group with access to outstanding teaching and students support provided by Federation University.

Through the diploma, students will gain the knowledge to manage people, build networks and lead teams through eight carefully crafted subjects that bridge the worlds of business and sport, from management principles and marketing, to event planning and athlete development.

The course also includes a focus on international sports management, digital marketing and human resources, with 100 hours of work placement for students to put theory into practice.

After successfully completing the course, students will then have the option to transition into the second year of a Bachelor of Business degree.

Announcing the new course, Federation University Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Duncan Bentley stated “this exciting collaboration allows students to tap into a wide range of industry experience from not only an A-League team, but the rich global knowledge of the broader City Football Group.”

“We are delighted to launch this course in collaboration with Melbourne City FC as it will provide students that have a passion for sport the opportunity to pathway into a bachelor's degree and further develop their business acumen.”

Melbourne City FC Chief Executive, Brad Rowse added “the Melbourne City Institute of Sport and Business is a unique collaboration that reflects our vision for developing the next generation of sports and business leaders.

“With Federation University’s expertise in higher education and our world-class facilities, we’re giving students the tools, experience, and connections they need to build successful, impactful careers in the sports industry.”

“Over the years, we’ve seen many students from past programs transition into full-time roles with Melbourne City, and we’re excited to build on that tradition by opening new doors for the talented graduates of MCISB.”
