Melbourne centres host Sport Climbing Australia Open Lead and Speed Championships

Sport Climbing Australia is hosting the national championships for Open athletes in the disciplines of Lead and Speed this weekend at Hardrock Nunawading and Gravity Worx Coburg.

The level of participation and interest in this sport has been rapidly growing in recent years and has peaked since being included as an Olympic Sport for Tokyo 2020.

Athletes have been selected for the lead discipline at their state titles and are competing for the Championship titles as well as selection to the Australian team to represent Australia at international competition.

Upcoming international events include the presitigous World Championship in Innsbruck Austria. This event is held every second year and Australia expects to send a full team to the event.

The Championships, which start today, are being supported by the Victorian Government Significant Sporting Events Program.

Important times for the event:

Friday 23rd March - Hardrock Nunawading, 3pm to 8pm Open - A Lead Qualifiers
Saturday 24th March - Hardrock Nunawading, 
           9am to 1.30am - Open A Lead Semi finals
           11.30am to 3pm - Paraclimbing, Masters and Open B Lead Qualifiers
           5pm to 7pm - Finals All Categories
Sunday 25th March - Gravity Worx Coburg, 11am to 3pm - Speed Event all categories
