Medibank Icehouse hosts inaugural trans Tasman ice hockey competition
The inaugural Trans-Tasman Championship between the Australian Ice Hockey League (AIHL) and the New Zealand Ice Hockey League (NZIHL) is set to take place this weekend (Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th July) at Melbourne's Medibank Icehouse.
AIHL Champions Melbourne Iceand runners up Newcastle North Stars will battle it out against NZIHL Champions Botany Swarm and runners up Southern Stampede.
The annual two day tournament will allow both the AIHL and the NZIHL to showcase their grand final teams against each other, alternating between Australia and New Zealand venues each year.
Australian Ice Hockey League Commissioner Tyler Lovering explains "Ice Hockey is a religion in North America, and it's really starting to gain interest and momentum down under with the level of talent coming up through the ranks.
"We're starting to fill seats quickly at events, our players are dedicated and everyone has a common goal to grow the sport. This Australia vs. New Zealand event shows the commitment of both leagues to see the sport grow and be as recognised by fans as it is in North America."
