Margaret River Surfing championship attracts thousands of spectators and fans
Western Australia’s surfing championship – the Margaret River Pro – is underway from 17th-27th May attracting more than 50 of the world's best professional surfers along with thousands of spectators, fans, and support crew, delivering a significant boost to the local economy.
The Margaret River Pro is crucial decider event for World Surf League's Championship Tour and is supported by the WA Government through Tourism WA
The surf competition is a proven visitor drawcard for the area, with the 2023 event attracting more than 3,500 visitors to the Margaret River region, injecting over $8 million into the local economy.
The Western Australia Margaret River Pro also acts as the Mid-season Cut, making it the last chance for surfers to score points to carry them through to the next phase of the tour, leading to heightened global attention on the event.
The Pro showcases the Margaret River region to audiences around the world through its global media coverage and online broadcast, as well as through the social media profiles of celebrity surfers, including Italo Ferreira, Caroline Marks, Jack Robinson, Caitlin Simmers, Filipe Toledo, and Tyler Wright.
WA Tourism Minister Reece Whitby notes "The WA Government has been proud to support the Western Australia Margaret River Pro for more than 25 years, as one of our most iconic and beloved events.
"This event brings thousands of visitors to the Margaret River region, creating a recurring boost to the local economy as visitors book out the region's hotels, explore its wineries and restaurants, and engage with local tourism operators.
"The high-profile talent this event brings to Margaret River is always cause for excitement and presents a fantastic opportunity for us to showcase the beauty and wonder of the region through the surfers' social media platforms, which are followed by millions of people across the world.
