Makino Aquatic Centre partners with The Big Swim to support Coastguard New Zealand

Makino Aquatic Centre, located in Feilding, on the North Island of New Zealand, is partnering with The Big Swim in June - a nationwide fundraising challenge supporting Coastguard New Zealand.

Locals are encouraged to take to the pool, log their laps, and raise funds to support the life-saving work of more than 2,000 Coastguard volunteers who dedicate their time to keeping New Zealanders safe on the water.

Participants will set a personal swim goal for the month of June ranging from 5 to 20 kilometres and collect sponsorships from friends, family and coworkers. The funds will go directly toward training, equipping, and maintaining the Coastguard’s extensive network of volunteers and 63 rescue units.

Aimee Flanders, Aquatic Services Manager shared “this is an opportunity to swim not just for fitness or recreation, but for a purpose. We’re excited to be a partner pool and part of this essential cause that touches lives across the country. Swimmers can participate for free at the Makino Aquatic Centre after raising their first $100, making it even more accessible to support this impactful initiative.”

The Big Swim comes with a legacy of success. In 2024, over 1,200 swimmers raised more than $350,000 to support Coastguard operations. With incidents on the water occurring an average of seven times per day, the demand for skilled volunteers and functional rescue vessels remains high.

Those who take on the challenge can choose from three distances:

  • Big – 5km (roughly 7 pool laps per day)

  • Bigger – 10km (14 laps/day)

  • Biggest – 20km (28 laps/day)

Alternatively, swimmers may nominate their own goal.

Participants will receive an exclusive Big Swim t-shirt, proudly marking their contribution to water safety in New Zealand.

Flanders added “this isn’t just about swimming laps it’s about playing your part in a national effort to keep our whānau and friends safe. We welcome swimmers of all levels to join us this June.”
