Locals welcome new Bowen aquatic playground
A $1.5 million aquatic playground has opened on the foreshore at Bowen's Front Beach.
The opening of the Splashpad, designed and constructed by Vortex Aquatic Playgrounds and Scape Shapes, attracted hundreds of locals keen to test out the state-of-the-art water slides, water cannons, jets and the massive 200 litre dumping bucket.
The Splashpad is a collaboration between Whitsunday Regional Council and Mayor Mike Brunker, that was made possible thanks to a Federal Government grant to aid in the redevelopment of the area following cyclones Yasi, Anthony and Larry.
Built on the foreshore and overlooking the picturesque Whitsunday Coast, the Splashpad is already proving to be a magnet for local families and tourists alike. Flanked by shady trees, barbeques and tables, the Splashpad is the perfect place to spend a few hours with the family.
Ron Swaab, Business Manager from Vortex Aquatic Playgrounds' Australian distributor PlayRope explains "although the Splashpad was designed for children under 12; the opening day has proven that its appeal transcends age, appealing to everyone from toddlers, through to teenagers and even adults.
"Australian's love being outside and cooling off in water is the obvious antidote to a hot Australian Summer. Our Splashpads are the perfect addition to public spaces as they require less water and chemicals than a traditional swimming pool, only require power when they are 'in-use' and because there is no pooling water, they do not pose a drowning hazard."
The Bowen foreshore underwent a $12 million development in 2009, which included an upgraded skate park, a soundshell structure, park landscaping, barbecue centre with picnic tables and a Catalina Interpretive Centre, based around the war planes that operated from the foreshore during World War II.
