Livingstone Shire Council names new aquatic centre after local sporting identity

Livingstone Shire Council has endorsed the naming of its new Cooee Bay Aquatic Centre after a local sporting pioneer.

A motion at the Council’s most recent meeting, submitted by Recreation and Culture Committee Co-Chair Councillor Andrea Friend, sought to honour the late Brian Dorey OAM in recognition of his outstanding contributions to local sport and recreation across the Capricorn Coast.

The proposal was supported by a community petition initiated by the Member for Keppel, Nigel Hutton, with approximately 220 signatories calling for the facility to be named the Capricorn Coast Brian Dorey OAM Aquatic Centre.

Acknowledging that the naming decision reflected both the scale of the project and the legacy of an individual who had made a lasting impact on the region, Livingstone Shire Mayor, Adam Belot stated “council recognises the deep respect and admiration held for Brian Dorey, whose tireless service to community sport continues to benefit generations.

“Naming the facility the Capricorn Coast Brian Dorey OAM Aquatic Centre is a fitting and enduring tribute that recognises both his legacy and the regional significance of this major community asset.”

Councillor Friend expressed her gratitude to residents for their involvement in the process and their strong show of support.

The Capricorn Coast Brian Dorey OAM Aquatic Centre is a cornerstone project for the region, set to deliver modern aquatic and recreational facilities for residents and visitors alike.

Brian Dorey was named Livingstone Shire Council Citizen of the Year in 2019.
