Lifesaving defibrillators delivered to Macleay aquatic centres

Three of Kempsey Shire Council’s aquatic centres have taken delivery of defibrillators that will benefit pool patrons by improving emergency first aid responses.

Jointly funded by Council and the Office of Sport under its Local Sport Defibrillator Program, the defibrillator devices will be located at the Crescent Aquatic Centre, Macleay Memorial Pool Gladstone and South West Rocks Swimming Pool.

Kempsey McElhone Swimming Complex received a defibrillator in early 2017 thanks to a generous donation from Mid North Coast Diagnostic Imaging Kempsey.

Kempsey Shire Council’s Manager Commercial Business, Gayleen Burley, said the use of a defibrillator within minutes of a sudden cardiac arrest increased a patient’s chances of survival by more than 70%.

She advised “the availability of defibrillators at our three local aquatic centres will mean a boost to emergency first aid for pool patrons and could prove lifesaving.

“The devices will also be accessible by community groups and neighbouring sporting clubs should the need arise.”

The Crescent Aquatic Centre adjoins sporting fields used for rugby league, cricket, soccer and rugby union and two community halls that host events throughout the year.

Staff at the aquatic centres have been trained in the use of the defibrillators.

Kempsey Shire Council is situated on the mid north coast region of NSW.
