Victorian Government offers more life-saving defibrillators for sports clubs

The Victorian Government has opened the fourth round of its Defibrillators for Sporting Clubs and Facilities Program, offering Victorian sports clubs another chance to apply for a new automatic external defibrillator (AED) at their facility.

Aiming to help save the lives of players, volunteers or spectators who suffer a sudden cardiac arrest, previous editions of the Program have seen almost 900 defibrillators provided to Victorian sports to clubs.

A statement from Sport and Recreation Victoria advises “in a life threatening sudden cardiac arrest – every second counts, and bystanders play a critical role.

“Without a defibrillator close by, the survival rate for sudden cardiac arrest is somewhere between two and five per cent.

“When a defibrillator is used within the first few minutes, the rate of survival can rise to 705.”

The new devices will appear on Ambulance Victoria’s database, so that triple zero operators will be able to direct callers to the new devices available when emergency strikes.

Applications must be made before Friday 22nd December 2017.
