Kingston Mountain Bike Park among 41 Tasmanian sports projects to receive funding

41 projects from across Tasmania will share in more than $8.4 million in state funding from the 2021-22 Improving the Playing Field Grants Program (Large Grants).

The funding aligns with the Tasmanian Government’s recognition of the importance of the sport and recreation sector to the community and its commitment to supporting all Tasmanians to access sport and recreation opportunities.

The Program aims to assist sporting clubs and associations improve facilities across Tasmania, helping to maintain and build participation rates across all sporting codes.

Local State Member for Franklin, Nic Street was pleased to announce that Kingborough Council had been awarded a $263,000 grant for upgrades of the Kingston Mountain Bike Park.

The Kingston Mountain Bike Park next to Kingborough Sports Centre is a popular local recreation facility, with many local families using it.

The Program is also providing assistance in supporting the building and construction industry and local jobs.

Improving the Playing Field is being provided through two streams – small grants for projects between $25,000 and $50,000 and large grants for projects between $50,000 and $500,000.

Projects to receive funding under the 2021-22 Program (Large Grants) include:

• $262,683 to the Kingborough Council for upgrades of the Kingston Mountain Bike Park;

• $500,000 to the Meander Valley Council for new squash courts at Deloraine Community Complex;

• $263,004 to the Devonport City Council for light towers at Byard Park;

• $378,357 to the West Coast Council towards an upgrade of Queenstown Basketball Stadium;

• $200,000 towards change room and accessibility improvements at Invermay Bowls and Community Club;

• $166,401 towards the replacement of the turf bowling green with synthetic green at Geeveston Bowls Club;

• $500,000 to Waratah Wynyard Council towards the Wynyard Sports Precinct; and

• $365,000 to Hockey Tasmania to upgrade pitch 2 at the Tasmanian Hockey Centre.

Funding under the Large Grants Program will contribute towards projects costing over $17 million in total around the State.
