Kings Beach Life Saving Facility Development Plan gets the green light

The Sunshine Coast Council has endorsed conceptual designs to upgrade the central surf lifesaving facility at Kings Beach, Caloundra.

The endorsed plan considers both the current and future needs of Surf Life Saving Queensland, the Metropolitan Caloundra Surf Life Saving Club and the community.

Sunshine Coast Councillor Tim Dwyer said due to the age of the Kings Beach life saving facility, increased population growth and pressure on surf lifesaving operations, there was a need to upgrade and improve the functionality and capacity of this important community asset.

Councillor Dwyer stated “(this) endorsement of the Kings Beach Life Saving Facility Development Plan is a great step forward for the community.

“There is no doubt the proposed upgrade is critical to ensure we can appropriately cater for the expected population growth in the southern end of our region, particularly from Caloundra South.

“Two options were considered. A rebuild rather than a major renovation is deemed the most appropriate as it provides sufficient storage and the best design outcome while maximising the site’s long-term potential.

“This option also delivers improved value for money and will reduce the period of disruption to life saving and lifeguard activities during construction.”

Councillor Dwyer said it was important to note however, the cost to implement the Facility Development Plan’s recommendations was beyond the capacity of council to fund in its own right.

He added “the plan’s endorsement provides stakeholders and council with a clear and focused direction to implement improvements, and provides a foundation for grant applications and facility planning.

“Future allocation towards the plan’s implementation will be considered through both internal and external funding partnerships and opportunities.”
