North Queensland Cowboys a key part of jobs initiative

The North Queensland Cowboys are one of 161 organisations to share in $30.66 million in funding under the latest round of Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative.

Queensland Minister for Training and Skills Development, Shannon Fentiman visited the NRL Cowboys Clubhouse last to meet the Club’s hospitality trainees who are advancing their career goals as part of the initiative.

Minister Fentiman commented “Skilling Queenslanders for Work is generating fantastic results around the state and the North Queensland Cowboys’ ‘Dream, Believe, Achieve’ project gives North Queenslanders who have struggled to find a job, the skills and training they need to find work and build a career.

“Our investment in programs like this is a shining example of the (Queensland) Government’s focus on jobs, with more than 13,000 people finding jobs thanks to the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative.”

“The North Queensland Cowboys have received an additional $194,700 under the latest round of funding to support a further 60 Queenslanders to gain the skills they need to get a job in our fast growing hospitality industry.”

 “Dream, Believe, Achieve project here at the NRL Cowboys House is one of seven projects to share in over $1.7 million in funding for Townsville, supporting up to 288 Queenslanders to gain the skills they need to get into work under the latest round of funding. “

North Queensland Cowboys’ General Manager – Community Relations, Fiona Pelling, said the organisation was committed to supporting the local community, including people looking to join the workforce.

Pelling added “Dream, Believe, Achieve has supported a range of people including quite a few mums who are looking for work for the first time in years, once their children are old enough, and really benefit from the training and support they receive through these projects.

“We have had 103 people complete one of our projects and seen 64 people go on to find jobs and 21 continue into further training.

“The whole club looks for ways to engage with and support our community, especially with Australian of the Year nominee Jonathan Thurston leading our player group. Seeing the club’s network, including our present team and past players like Ray Thompson, getting behind our Skilling Queenslanders for Work participants and other community activities lifts everyone to keep working hard towards these goals.”

Skilling Queenslanders for Workfunds skills development, training and job opportunities for unemployed, disengaged or disadvantaged Queenslanders through a suite of targeted skills and training programs.
