KDV Sport wins Queensland State Architecture Award
The Gold Coast’s KDV Sport facility has been recognised for its design excellence at the Queensland Architecture Awards 2017 presentation winning the State Award for Commercial Architecture – the highest honour for commercial architecture.
For designer Hiromi Lauren, this is great recognition for her first building built in her own right through her practice, Shiro Architects, with early support from MBMO Architects.
Lauren explains “we are very proud of this achievement and seeing our design become a significant landmark within the Gold Coast sporting precinct in Carrara, is extremely satisfying and rewarding.”
Lauren believes the recognition and appreciation is very much a shared experience of those who own, have managed the construction of, and those who run KDV Sport as the ultimate professional reward.
Lauren added “without a great client team, it is not possible to do an architect’s best work, and in the team behind KDV Sport in Director, Julia Shtengelova and Project Director, Wim Steenbeek, we have the best team we could have hoped for.”
Born and educated in Osaka, Japan, Lauren worked for 20 years for the late, widely celebrated Harry Seidler. Much of Seidler’s influence can be seen in the generous concrete and curves of the KDV Sport entry space.
KDV Sport Director, Julia Shtengelova was equally proud having witnessed her family’s’ vision come to life, commenting “from concept design to current day, our journey has been truly remarkable.
“Our partnership with Shiro Architects has been exceptional from the start. My family had a vision to build the best golf & tennis facility in the world and this award certainly reflects this.”
Lauren added “we are now hoping we can go on to win the Commercial Architecture National Award in November in Canberra.”
