John O'Neill announces resignation from Executive Chairman role at casino group Star Entertainment

Amid an ongoing inquiry by the NSW Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority into The Star's suitability to run its Sydney casino, John O'Neill, Executive Chairman of Star Entertainment Group, John O'Neill, is to resign from his post.

In an announcement made to the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX), it was advised "Mr O'Neill informed fellow directors late today of his decision.

"Mr O'Neill will transition his chair and executive responsibilities in an orderly manner."

The date of O'Neill's departure is yet to be decided.

The Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority inquiry being conducted by Adam Bell SC has heard evidence of a secret junket room operating at the casino, senior managers turning a blind eye to money laundering risks and misleading the Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority and the National Australia Bank.

In late March, Star Entertainment Group's Managing Director and Chief Executive, Matt Bekier, also tendered his resignation.

O'Neill (pictured) was appointed to the role in April on an Interim basis after Bekier's exit.

The company's statement added "interim arrangements will be announced once finalised. A search for a permanent [chief executive] was commenced last month.”

Other resignations include Chief Financial Officer Harry Theodore, Chief Casino Officer (NSW) Greg Hawkins and Chief Legal and Risk Officer and Company Secretary Paula Martin.

O'Neill has held other high-profile roles including having been Chief Executive of the Australian Rugby Union and Football Federation Australia.
