John Harnden Appointed Australian Grand Prix Chairman
The Victorian Government has announced that leading sports executive John Harnden has been appointed Chairman of the Australian Grand Prix Corporation board.
Harnden will replace Melbourne Formula 1 Grand Prix stalwart Ron Walker who, after 23 years in the role, recently retired from Victoria’s motorsports events body.
Harnden is one of world sport’s most respected executives, who most recently served as Chief Executive of the ICC Cricket World Cup – an event worth $150 million to Victoria’s economy. He joined the AGPC board in 2006, before becoming Walker’s deputy in 2007.
A statement from Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews explained “Harnden brings a wealth of leadership and governance experience in delivering world-renowned entertainment and sporting events.
“He has forged a global profile working for the South Australian Cricket Association, Village Roadshow International Theme Parks, as ICC Cricket World Cup chief executive and CEO of the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games.”
Acknowledging Ron Walker’s contribution to the Australian Grand Prix, Premier Andrews added “Ron Walker has ensured the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix is amongst the most successful events in the sporting world. He’ll be missed as chair, and his contribution to Victoria won’t be forgotten.”
