Jellie Park spa pool reopened

The spa pool at Christchurch's Jellie Park Recreation and Sport Centre reopened this week after the latest testing proved negative for Legionella bacterium.

The Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB) confirmed the seven water samples taken from the spa on 18th August were negative for Legionella bacterium meaning it can reopen to the public.

The spa was closed on 12th August after initial testing revealed one out of seven water samples tested positive for Legionella bacterium.

During its closure staff thoroughly decontaminated the spa and carried out servicing and maintenance improvements including the installation of new water jets.

Christchurch City Council Head of Recreation and Sports John Filsell says the spa is popular at Jellie Park so it was good to have it back in operation.

Filsell advised "we have worked closely with the CDHB and our environmental officers to develop additional testing processes going forward.

"Regular legionella bacterium testing will now be carried out at all Council spa pools and we have also implemented an additional fortnightly super chlorination process.

“Both these actions are above the required industry standards, but the safety of our users is our primary concern and these extra measures will help to ensure our water quality remains high.”
