Jakarta to host 18th Asian Games in 2018

Indonesia’s capital Jakarta is to host the next Asian Games in 2018.

Agreed by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) at the recent Asian Games in South Korea, Jakarta replaces the Vietnamese capital Hanoi which had originally won the bid to host the 18th Asian Games, but withdrew because of economic problems.

Hanoi’s bid was for 2019, but Indonesia will host the event in 2018 so it doesn’t clash with the country’s 2019 presidential elections.

The OCA is also considering allowing Australia, New Zealand and other Pacific nations to compete in future editions of the Asian Games.

OCA is working towards letting Pacific states compete starting with the 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in Turkmenistan.

Commenting on the development, OCA President Sheikh Ahmad Al Fahad Al Sabah stated “I think we have an opportunity, why not the Indoor Games as a first exercise?”

“If it’s successful, I think we can also jump to the winter sports, let us do it step by step.”
