Ironman to organise Singapore Marathon after Spectrum Worldwide sale

Sport Singapore has announced that IRONMAN Endurance Asia will organise the annual Singapore Marathon for the next 10 years, starting with this year’s Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore (SCMS).

This comes after IRONMAN acquired Spectrum Worldwide, which has organised SCMS since 2013.

In a statement, SportSG said it evaluated five "strong" proposals and eventually chose IRONMAN’s bid due to its long term sustainability plans, new strategies to grow the marathon, as well as the expertise in organising mass participation events globally.

 Sport Singapore Chief Executive Lim Teck Yin stated “IRONMAN presented a comprehensive proposal that best met our aspirations.

"With their extensive expertise and experience through nearly 260 events globally, we believe that they have right acumen to enhance Marathon Singapore locally and internationally.”

While IRONMAN now owns or operates five marathons around the world, this will be IRONMAN's first running event in Singapore.

IRONMAN Chief Executive Andrew Messick stated “IRONMAN is committed to delivering exceptional events and we look forward to working with SportSG in raising the profile of the historic Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore to athletes around the world.”

Spectrum Worldwide was founded 25 years ago in Sydney by Chief Executive Chris Robb.

Commenting on the sale, Robb stated that the sale was “an incredibly proud moment” adding “it's been an amazing 25 years that started with a dream in my spare room in Sydney not long after arriving from Zimbabwe with only $15,000 in my pocket.

“I have been lucky to have had so many amazing experiences and met so many wonderful people on the journey which has taken me to many places including Singapore for the past 14 years.”

IRONMAN also announced that it will open its new Asia headquarters in Singapore.

Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore is the only IAAF Gold Label race in South East Asia, and will be celebrating its 15th anniversary on 4th December.
