IPL 2009 To Move Overseas?
The 2009 Indian Premier League (IPL) Twenty20 cricket tournament will be staged away from the Indian subcontinent due to security concerns, according to a statement from Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President Shashank Manohar.
Reuters reports that IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi said four possible venues were being considered - among which Australia features. England and the United Arab Emirates are also in the running, while South Africa appears to be the favourite.
Reuters reported that the BCCI failed to get government clearance for security cover because the tournament clashes with Indiaâs general election, to be held in April and May. The BCCI had revised the match dates three times in an attempt to get around the problem, but this did not satisfy the government.
The IPL, which begins in less than three weeks will now be played on its original dates, 10th April to 24th May in the chose host nation.
