IOC approves Tokyo 2020 Olympic venues

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has given its approval to a number of venues that will feature at the 2020 summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.

The Aomi Urban Sports Venue will be used to stage the newly-added discipline of basketball 3×3, as well as sport climbing at Tokyo 2020.

This temporary venue will be set up in the Tokyo Bay Zone, close to the Olympic Village.

In addition, the IOC has given its seal of approval to the Olympic BMX Course, which will be built in the northern part of Tokyo’s Ariake district, the waterfront area of the Japanese capital city.

The venue will be used to host BMX racing and skateboarding, which will feature at the Olympic Games for the first time at Tokyo 2020.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games will take place across a total of 40 venues, including eight new permanent venues, 24 existing sites and eight temporary venues. Of these sites, 39 will be utilised at the Olympics, while 20 of them will be used for the Paralympic Games.

Commenting on the venues, Toshiro Muto, Chief Eexecutive of the Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, advised “the newly-added urban sports such as BMX freestyle and basketball 3×3 are very popular among younger generations and will help us to connect with new fans.

“We are confident that the Ariake and Aomi areas will become symbolic locations for the Tokyo 2020 Games that engage youth from around the world. Now that the venues are fixed, we will work in cooperation with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government to make these areas one of the greatest festival districts in Olympic and Paralympic history.

“We will also continue our preparations in cooperation with all the relevant parties in order to deliver a Games where athletes can perform at their best.”
