Invercargill City Council’s Splash Palace investment generates rising visitation

An anticipated rise in user numbers at Invercargill’s Splash Palace has eventuated as people flock to the facility’s new hydroslide complex.

Invercargill City Council invested $3.2 million into building the new three hydroslide (waterslide) complex at the South Island aquatic facility, predicting that visitation levels would rise by 60,000 a year as a result of the additions.

Launching from a 13 metre high tower, the tallest indoor launch platform in New Zealand, the three slides, from Polin Waterparks. differ in length; at 69 metres, 79 metres and with a 101 metres raft slide.

Reporting on the success to a meeting of the Council’s Infrastructure Committee last week, Council Leisure and Recreation General Manager, Steve Gibling advised how the facility was managing the rise in visits.

As reported by the Stuff news website, Gibling advised “we undertook a quite significant roster review at end of last year and earlier this year in order to ensure that with increased numbers to the pool our rosters were able to cope.

“We have had no issues to date.

“The feedback has been positive because it is good to have the place being used. I think it has been a great investment as a community asset, and we are seeing that with participation.”

Regional Spaces and Places strategy endorsed
Invercargill City Council has endorsed a regional spaces and places strategy for Southland.

Sport Southland and Sport NZ prompted the creation of the strategy in partnership with Southland’s three councils, as well as funding agencies the Invercargill Licensing Trust, Community Trust South, and Mataura Licensing Trust.

The strategy endorses the Council’s plans to spend $4.5 million on deferred maintenance and strengthening work at Rugby Park.
