Intruder charged after breaking into Sydney Zoo and swimming in aquarium

NSW Police have charged a man who broke into the Sydney Zoo and swam with exotic fish in its aquarium.

The 30-year-old allegedly entered Sydney Zoo in the city’s west, ignoring warning signs, on Monday with his antics filmed and posted on social media.

NSW Police used the video of the bearded man, understood to be a Western Sydney resident, as the basis for their investigation.

Unimpressed by the intruder’s actions, Sydney Zoo Managing Director, Jake Burgess told 7NEWS “he not only jeopardised his own safety but that of the welfare of our animals as well.”

The man has been issued with a Court attendance notice for behaving in an offensive manner, entering enclosed non-agricultural lands and interfering with business, and opening, entering or damaging an animal enclosure.

He is due to face Blacktown Local Court on 17th September.

Sydney Zoo is understood to be reviewing its security arrangements while the matter has also been referred to the RSPCA.
