Industry plan for reduced emissions in Western Australian tourism

Tourism Council WA has today launched a new program for Western Australian tourism operators to commit to reducing their carbon emissions using a tailored approach.

The Tourism Emissions Reduction Program, announced at Tourism Council WA’s Sustainable Tourism Forum, will enable tourism operators to undertake an online emissions assessment and develop a bespoke emissions reduction plan.

Tourism businesses can then indicate their commitment to improving their sustainability to visitors by displaying their waste and emission reduction measures via a link or QR code on their website.

Advising that the Western Australian tourism industry wants to achieve the highest standards in sustainable tourism, Tourism Council WA Chief Executive, Evan Hall stated “the next generation of visitors to WA are looking for low emission, accessible, and sustainable tourism experiences in our unique natural environment.”

Noting that tourism operators and destinations now had a tool to meet the growing cohort of travellers favouring sustainable tourism product and experiences, Hall explained “Tourism Council WA has already achieved 1,300 sustainable tourism accredited businesses across WA, and we will now work closely with those businesses to reduce emissions and improve accessibility.

“By providing information about the sustainability of their tourism business operations, businesses can appeal to guests who value sustainable practices.”

Western Australian Deputy Premier and Tourism Minister Hon Rita Saffioti said creating a sustainable tourism industry was a key component of the Western Australian Visitor Economy Strategy 2024 (WAVES).

Minister Saffioti noted “the approach announced today by industry is a critical step forward in sustainable tourism in Western Australia.”

The Tourism Emissions Reduction Program applies to tours, attractions, accommodation, and experiences, and is complimentary for Tourism Council WA members.

It is designed for small and medium tourism operators to make a meaningful change to their tourism experience.
