HYROX indoor fitness competition expands across Australia
Following an overwhelming response in 2023 to HYROX, the world’s fastest growing indoor fitness competition - which combines endurance and functional challenges - is returning to Melbourne this weekend, Sydney in July with Brisbane and Perth competition events scheduled for later in the year.
HYROX Australia and New Zealand Country Manager, Mat Lock advised “in just twelve months, the popularity of HYROX has skyrocketed across Australia. Responding to this incredible uptake, we have doubled the number of races to make the sport of fitness racing even more accessible nationwide. This expansion will see over 20,000 everyday racers joining the HYROX family as they run onto the finisher stage under the bright lights.”
Being held from 29th to 30th of June, HYROX will host its first ever two-day race in Australia at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. Next, racers are invited to take part in the Sydney race at Sydney Showground on the 27th of July. Soon after, HYROX will head to Queensland to host its inaugural Brisbane race on the 17th of August at Brisbane Convention Centre, followed by its first ever Perth race on the 14th of September at the Perth Convention & Exhibition Centre.
HYROX is anticipating to attract over 205,000 competitors by the end of 2024, and with its standardised combination of hybrid endurance and functional fitness, HYROX event organisers will be able to gauge Australia's performance against the rest of the world.
The HYROX format comprises a 1km run leading to a functional workout station, repeated eight times. Participants can choose to enter solo, team up for the doubles division, or take part as a relay team of four. The stations include:
1,000m SkiErg
50m sled pull
50m sled push
80m burpee broad jumps
1,000m rowing
200m farmers carry
100m sandbag lunges
75 or 100 wall balls
HYROX’s global appeal can be attributed to how accessible it is for anyone at any level of fitness – there is no finishing time restriction or entry qualification needed to take part. From elite athletes and casual gym-goers to those with a healthy competitive spirit, the race is open to anyone who wants to test themselves. More than 5500 participants took up the challenge in 2023, including a sell out in the Melbourne race.
Founded in Germany in 2017 with 650 competitors, HYROX has since expanded across 21 countries with over 90,000 participants in 2023 alone. Due to its unique approach to making fitness an inclusive competition, HYROX has recently been named in TIME Magazine’s annual TIME100 Most Influential Companies 2024 list. The 2024 season will see HYROX increase its reach to 26 countries, including 63 events across North America, Europe, Middle East, and Asia-Pacific, with the world championship event taking place from the 7-9th of June, in Nice, France.
Since registrations have opened for the Australian events, the response has been spectacular, with over 20,000+ participants and spectators expected to attend the four races. Combined with the stellar venues, HYROX promises to inject an electric atmosphere across Australia’s fitness scene in 2024.
