Hornsby cricketers to benefit from new site screens

With the cricket season approaching, Hornsby Shire Council has completed the installation of new sight screens were erected at Waitara’s Mark Taylor Oval.

Located next to the newly opened  PCYC Hornsby/Ku-ring-gai, the new 'Eclipse' sight screens from Play Hard Sports have been installed to ensure batsman have a clear view of the bowler and their delivery.

These new screens have an added feature – they can be rotated to reveal a black side that makes them ideal for the limited over game that uses a white ball.

Hornsby Shire Mayor and former Federal Government Minister Philip Ruddock stated “some of our local cricketers have already tested out the new screens and given them a ringing endorsement.

“Cricket has always been an important aspect of summer in our Shire and that remains the case.”

Northern District Cricket Club President Mike Langford is among those who are thrilled by the new screens, commenting “it’s fantastic that we now have some of the best sight screens in Sydney “It’s certainly better than having 60-year-old men climbing ladders to change the screens from white to black with tarps.

“We’d like to offer a huge thanks to Hornsby Shire Council for this investment.”

The new screens are just part of a range of works Hornsby Shire Council has carried out to prepare the Shire’s sporting fields for the summer sporting season.

New wicket surfaces have been installed at Montview Oval, Campbell Park and Headen Park, while the cricket practice nets at Ron Payne Oval are being refurbished.

The cricket sight screens at Storey Park are also being expanded.

Mayor Ruddock added “cricket may be the most popular summer sport in Hornsby Shire, but it is certainly not the only one.

“Council has also prepared 22 baseball and softball fields that are ready for play, while fields have also been prepared for touch football and austag.”

It is estimated that more than 6,000 people will be playing sport at Council’s various facilities throughout summer.
