Hingerty to Leave ATEC

The Australian Tourism Export Council (ATEC) has announced that Matt Hingerty, ATEC's Managing Director for the past five-and-a half-years, has decided to leave the organisation early next year upon the completion of his second three-year term.
ATEC Chairman John King described Mr Hingertyâs contribution to ATEC, to the inbound tourism sector and to the wider tourism industry as significant. He said that ATEC was sorry to see Matt depart, but respected his decision to seek new opportunities.
King explained that âunder his leadership ATEC has developed to become one of the most respected tourism bodies in Australia and internationally?, adding that Matt had displayed a unique ability to relate to individual ATEC members and tourism operators, Ministers, departmental officials and leaders of commerce with equal effectiveness.
King believes Hingerty has ensured a solid future for ATEC, stating âhis advocacy on behalf of the tourism industry, while passionate and strong, has nevertheless earned the respect and attention of those receiving the representations.
âAs a result his counsel has often sought by government ministers and other industry leaders.
âIn spite of a variety of challenging issues and difficult trading conditions for many involved in inbound tourism, ATEC has remained strong under Mattâs leadership and management.?
Explaining his departure, Hingerty explained âit was difficult to advise the Board that I will not be seeking a new contract, but I strongly believe in renewal, and after six years I believe it is time for a change â for both me and for ATEC.
âATEC has never been a âone man bandâ. It has a great staff, an engaged Board, passionate members, and supportive stakeholders. It is also in a very sound financial position. It is set-up for a dynamic future in shaping the fortune of the tourism industry and serving its members.?
Hingerty said the achievement of which he was most proud was the fostering of the industryâs youth through Young ATEC.
âThere is a massive generational change underway in the industry at the moment, with brilliant young people coming through the ranks bringing a renaissance of new ideas and new passion.
âAt the same time they are respectful and hungry for the knowledge of our industryâs pioneers. I am absolutely certain that because of them, our industry, and ATEC will thrive in the future.?
âI have given the Board the longest possible notice to allow for a considered and smooth transition. âAs for me â (I have) no firm plans yet other than engineering more time with my large and rapidly growing family.?
John King said that the ATEC National Board had agreed on a process and timetable for the appointment of a new Managing Director. He said that the position would be advertised in national newspapers in mid-August and hoped to have a replacement in place before Matt departs in mid January 2011.
