High winds rip roofing materials from Adelaide Oval
Hundreds of workers on the Adelaide Oval redevelopment were yesterday (Tuesday 22nd October) evacuated from the site as strong winds ripped roofing from the new southern stand.
Winds in excess of 100 kilometres per hour caused extensive damage to the construction, tearing fabric cover from a roof frame.
Union officials said hundreds of workers were sent home as a safety precaution while Police shut neighbouring War Memorial Drive in the city because of the risk from flying debris.
Earlier in the day, workers started laying new turf on the oval in preparation for coming cricket fixtures, including an Ashes Test match in early December.
The $535 million redevelopment of the Adelaide Oval is expected to be completed in time for the 2014 AFL season.
