Hervey Bay cultural attraction proves popular with visitors
Incorporating the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery and a brand new intrepretive centre - the Fraser Coast Discovery Sphere - the Fraser Coast Cultural Centre is proving popular with locals and visitors since its opening earlier this month.
Visitors to the $4 million Centre are welcomed by an 11 metre high hardwood and steel sculpture of a breaching humpback whale, representing Nala the whale who has visited Hervey Bay every year on her annual migration since 1992.
Within, the Fraser Coast Discovery Sphere hosts a theatre experience showcasing underwater imagery and a full sized reproduction of a whale skeleton.
Local Aboriginal legends are woven throughout displays, which explore endangered marine life of the Mary River and the origins of the Macadamia Nut.
Fraser Coast Mayor Gerard O'Connell acknowledged the importance of the Cultural Centre believing that it will become an important regional attraction.
Mayor O'Connell stated "for me this is one of the most significant steps in the cultural maturity of the Fraser Coast.
"As a community, our culture is at the very heart and soul of our community and at the heart and soul of that is people.
"While it's an iconic building and will be for years to come, it's the people that will visit here and will display here that will be the focal point."
The state-of-the-art Hervey Bay Regional Gallery showcases the creative talents of the region's artists and hosts artworks and artefacts on tour from galleries and museums across Australia.
