Gympie Regional Council advances plans for regional aquatic centre

Gympie Regional Council has adopted a concept plan for a new regional aquatic centre that will include a 10-lane, 50 metre competition pool; a six-lane, 25 metre indoor heated pool; a water slide and a splashpad.

The Council will now seek funding from both the Federal and Queensland Governments for the new Gympie Aquatic Centre.

Explaining the need for a new aquatic facility in the town, Gympie Mayor Ron Dyne stated "(our) current pool is almost 60 years old and below the standard found in most regional centres.

"One of council's key responsibilities is to provide a range of services which support the wellbeing of its residents." he said.

Six aquatic centres were inspected as part of the investigation process to determine the preferred facilities and site layout with the emphasis for the new Centre being about creating a destination which will cater for families of all ages with a range of aquatic activities.

A preliminary estimate of cost for the current preferred design is $20 million.

The concept plan also includes options for future expansion with a hydrotherapy pool, additional waterslides, a 250 metre2 leisure pool and F&B outlets.
