Great Ocean Road Marathon breaks record

Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the Great Ocean Road Marathon attracted over 6,200 competitors to Victoria’s iconic coastline on 17th and 18th May.

The number of finishers was up 15% on the previous year with 1,123 runners completing the 45km and 2,560 participants completing the 23 kilometre run.

National marathon champion Alex Matthews was first across the line in 2:32.33 and Kirstin Bull won the women’s race in a time of 3:07:51, only three minutes ahead of Lucie Hardiman.

IMG Events and Federations Vice Presidnet Greg Hooton stated “with over 6,200 runners competing across a range of events over the Great Ocean Road Marathon weekend, all the runners should be congratulated. There are just so many great stories coming from the weekend. I think that the Great Ocean Road marathon certainly lived up to the title of being the most challenging and stunning run.”

Challenging it was, with runners having to conquer a series of steep inclines – and equally demanding slopes – as well as unforgiving terrain as they ran along the picturesque Great Ocean Road.

IMG Sports Technology Group developed the online event management system and website for the event which facilitated the registration of thousands of competitors.

Proceeds from the popular event were donated to the Apollo Bay and District Health Foundation.
