Goolwa prepares for rising water

As water levels rise in South Australiaâs Goolwa channel, Alexandrina Council is preparing for the return of recreational and business boating enthusiasts to the area.

Mayor Kym McHugh recently spoke of Goolwa being an extremely popular recreational boating area, stating "with water now rising in the Goolwa channel as a result of inflows from Currency Creek and Finniss River, weâre ready for a positive return to boating activities.

"While we will continue to push for fresh water for the lakes and river system, we encourage South Australians to enjoy the incredible boating and fishing activities which are available in the area.

"This is a beautiful part of South Australia, it's got everything; National Parks, wineries and fresh produce, great fishing and boating. The wharf precinct is a big drawcard and it will be again this year with water up in the channel.

"I encourage people making Christmas holiday plans to get in early to book accommodation - this season will be better than ever."

While the Goolwa Channel levels have been low, Alexandrina Council has taken the opportunity to start some capital works to improve the area for the future.

Mayor Mchugh added "we have dredged 9000 cubic metres of sand and clay at the Goolwa Wharf precinct near Hector's Jetty.

"This makes room for more boats to be moored. Floating pontoons will be installed in time for next yearsâ Wooden Boat and Music Festival.

"The works we have undertaken will make boating seasons for the years ahead better than ever."

The first stage of the project will be co-funded by the Recreational Boating Facilities Fund and the Alexandrina Council.
