Go-ahead for major upgrade of Perry Park

Sydney City Council is to develop a new multipurpose sports centre at Perry Park in the city's southern suburbs of Green Square and Alexandria.

The Council is to tender the park's upgrade with the design and documentation of improved recreational facilities at the 24,000 metre2 park now underway, with building work to begin late next year.

Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP said the new facilities would include a six-court indoor sports centre and multi-purpose synthetic field, stating "this new centre will offer residents in Alexandria and Green Square, and visitors from across Sydney, high-quality sporting facilities.

"Local residents told us they wanted more options for active, healthy lives. The upgrade of Perry Park will help deliver that. These wonderful new facilities will be worthy of our future champions.

"The City is also planning for the future as we see more residents moving to Green Square. It's important that the southern part of our city has great parks, sporting facilities and playgrounds."

The Perry Park upgrade will include improved better paths and lighting, new trees and a playground, as well as a new creche, kiosk, exercise room and club rooms.

Environmentally sustainable initiatives including stormwater capture and re-use, passive building ventilation and sustainable materials will be used in the development.

The park, on the corner of Bourke Road and Maddox Street at Alexandria, is surrounded by commercial and industrial premises and is one of the larger open green spaces in Alexandria and Green Square.

There is presently a flat area of turf grass, some fitness equipment, a small amenities block and a two-court basketball building.

The existing basketball courts are leased in perpetuity to the City of Sydney Basketball Association, which has been providing programs to the community for the past 70 years.
