Global Wellness Institute partners with Anytime Fitness on inaugural report on Australia’s wellness economy

The Global Wellness Institute (GWI) has collaborated with Anytime Fitness to release GWI’s first-ever report on Australia’s wellness economy. The findings show Australia is one of the world’s top 10 wellness economies and 4th in Asia-Pacific, valued at US$126.7 billion in 2023 after 10.9% growth in just one year.

With some of the fastest growth rates globally - driven by wellness tourism, thermal/mineral springs, wellness real estate, mental wellness, and physical activity—Australia has advanced from #13 in 2019 to #10 in 2023 in overall wellness economy size.

This country report is the only detailed measurement of the size of Australia’s wellness economy, presenting data on its eleven wellness sectors. The report shows the trajectory of the wellness economy in Australia from 2019 to 2023, as well as subsector details where data are available. It also contains global and regional comparisons to show where Australia stands vis-à-vis its peers and competitors.

The report highlights that when it comes to its wellness markets, “Australia punches well above its weight”.

Australians spend an average of $4,824 per year on a vast array of wellness pursuits, from physical activity to healthy eating to personal care and beauty. Many global fitness brands and innovations originate from Australia, leveraging a strong fitness tradition and entrepreneurial spirit.

Australia is also a leader in wellness real estate – ranking 4th in the world – having pioneered many wellness communities that support healthy lifestyles, vibrant social connections, and sustainable living in its growing housing markets.
