Gladstone Council announces preferred site for new Boyne Tannum Aquatic Recreation Centre

A preferred site for the proposed Boyne Tannum Aquatic Recreation Centre has been chosen following a resolution adopted at Gladstone Regional Council’s most recent general meeting.

Council resolved to adopt the recommendations of the Boyne Tannum Aquatic Recreation Centre Options Analysis, which highlighted a parcel of land at Coronation Drive in Tannum Sands as the preferred site for the development of the Centre.

The resolution also allows Council to proceed to a Concept Design phase upon review and refinement of the Preliminary Master Plan.

Gladstone Region Mayor Matt Burnett said the Coronation Drive site was chosen after comprehensive community consultation was undertaken between February and March 2019.

Mayor Burnett advised “results from this community engagement period were released in June 2019 and highlighted significant community support for the project.

“Those results also identified possible development locations and preferred facility components.

“The community’s preference was to have the facility built on the Coronation Drive site, with other sites up for consideration within the Options Analysis being 10 Canoe Point Road at Tannum Sands and Jacaranda Drive at Boyne Island.

“The Concept Design will further investigate the capital and operational costs associated with the facility as well the potential construction phasing.”

Mayor Burnett said the Boyne Tannum Aquatic Recreation Centre would most likely be constructed in stages, with the initial components of the facility to be determined once the Concept Design is complete.

Advising that components could include a 25 metre pool, 50 metre pool, childrens’ splash zone, waterslides and amenities, he concluded “Council expects this to be presented at a general meeting in 2021.

“We encourage residents interested in this project to visit Council’s website for future project updates.”
