Further AFL fan violence prompts Adelaide Oval investigation

South Australian Police and Adelaide Oval Stadium Management Authority are investigating a fight between fans at last night's Port Adelaide v Essendon AFL match at Adelaide Oval - both teams' last game for the year.

In videos posted online on Saturday morning, two male fans wearing supporters' gear from each side can be seen fighting in the ground's Riverbank Stand while the game is underway.

Other people try to intervene and scream at them to stop.

As reported by the ABC, South Australian Police said they were "aware of an assault that took place at Adelaide Oval during the football match" and were "speaking to the people involved and it is currently being investigated".

A spokesperson for the Adelaide Oval Stadium Management Authority said CCTV was "now being analysed to identify the individuals who will face significant stadium bans in addition to any police action".

The spokeperson added “we will also work with the clubs to ascertain whether those responsible were members and, if so, they may face further penalties from their clubs.

"It should be stressed that the actions of these individuals, while reprehensible, was an isolated incident among a very well-behaved crowd of more than 39,000 fans."

The Power lost the match to the Bombers by 22 points, eliminating the slim chance that the Adelaide team had to make the finals.

Five men were charged and banned from Adelaide Oval for three months after another brawl at a Port Adelaide AFL match in April while AFL matches at Geelong’s GMHBA Staidum and at the MCG have also been marred by spectator violence this year.

After the Geelong fight in July, a Cats official said they would consider separating fans from opposing teams.

However, AFL Chief Executive Gillon McLachlan ruled out the move.
