Permanent bollards boost external safety at Adelaide Oval

The installation of 14 permanent bollards to help protect Adelaide Oval patrons has been undertaken along North Adelaide's King William Road.

Mindful of patron safety in and around venues and in public places, temporary bollards were first installed at the venue last year.

Introducing the installation, South Australian Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Local Government Stephan Knoll stated “around 120 bollards will be installed to help keep South Australians and other patrons safe when they’re attending events at Adelaide Oval.

“Unfortunately, in recent times we’ve seen a number of disgusting examples of motor vehicles being used as weapons in public places around the world.

“Last year around 1.8 million people passed through the gates at Adelaide Oval to watch the footy, cricket, attend concerts and a host of other events.

“The State Government’s absolute priority is to keep South Australians and our community safe.

“That’s why (we are) ensuring that these bollards are going in the ground as soon as possible to help protect Adelaide Oval users.

“Installation of these bollards should be completed by August, weather permitting.

“It’s also great news that a local South Australian company, SADB Directional Drilling, was awarded the contract to deliver this important security upgrade.

“Further works will be undertaken around Adelaide Oval’s event schedule to ensure there is minimal disruption to Oval patrons.

“In addition to the installation of these bollards, further security measures have also been put in place by way of planter boxes and retaining walls to prevent vehicle access.

“These bollards, or Hostile Vehicle Mitigation Devices, meet international standards and the design and specifications have been developed following an exhaustive security review.”
