From Melbourne amusement arcades to San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge

No Sense Entertainment, a business started in Melbourne supplying amusement arcade machines in 2004, has recently secured its most prestigious contract, providing San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge with coin-based commemorative medallions.

With the iconic Bridge marking its 80th anniversary this year, No Sense Entertainment is providing premium 24 carat gold-plated medallions that will be sold through the attraction’s retail outlet.

No Sense Entertainment, Director Nikolai Nikolaeff explains “we delivered the Golden Gate Bridge their 24K gold plated medallions and they have already run through a quarter of their order in only three weeks.

“We are now working with their management (the US National Park Service’s San Francisco office) to develop a range for all their sites including Muir Woods and Alcatraz – the famous San Francisco prison island.”

Supplying the Golden Gate Bridge is one of a series of outlets to whom No Sense Entertainment supply speciality souvenir coin machines and other coin related products.

Now focusing on souvenir penny rress machines, medallion machines and, its latest innovation, giant coin wishing wells, No Sense Entertainment has an impressive client list including the Melbourne Star Observation Wheel, Zoos South Australia, Zoos Victoria, Scenic World Blue Mountains, Sydney Tower Eye, Old Melbourne Gaol, Luna Park Melbourne, Puffing Billy Railway and Echo Point Blue Mountains (all in Australia); Madam Tussauds Singapore, Universal Studios Singapore, National Museum Singapore, Marina Bay Sands Singapore; and OUE Skyspace Los Angeles.

Having quickly moved away from arcade machines, the company became an innovator with ‘penny press machines – which take a coin and elongates it with a new design as a commemorative or souvenir token.

Nikolaeff advises “from the beginning, we never wanted to poach other people’s sites and clients. We thought that we could seek opportunity elsewhere and thrive and this thinking has served us well.

“Indeed, we let the quality of our machines, products and servicing speak for themselves and the most satisfying feeling is when we have people contacting us because they’ve seen our machines elsewhere and seen the quality and want to deal with us.”

Over the years No Sense Entertainment has evolved its penny presses to by introducing coin and note taking ability, essentially, Nikolaeff adds, “making it easier for customers to purchase a penny press Experience.”

The company then added medallion machines to its a range, a more premium product at a higher price point, and, most recently introduced giant coin wishing wells as a way for locations to raise funds for either their own business or to give to a charity.

Nikolaeff explains “essentially, our thinking was for our client’s customers to spend $2 on a penny press and $5 on a medallion machine with any loose change a customer had left over to be used in the wishing well.

Commenting on the businesses growth, Nikolaeff continues “expanding the company has been very satisfying for us and we are proud that we manufacture our machines in our small workshop in Williamstown in Melbourne.

“We recently invested in a 300 ton press machine that is being delivered soon which is being done in order to satisfy the stringent regulations that Universal Studios has with regard to manufacturing standards.”

No Sense Entertainment has also expanded internationally, setting up a company in Singapore in 2012, and expanding across Asia and into the USA.

As part of this expansion, Nikolaeff is now based in the USA while partner and co-founder Peter Turnbull heads operations in Melbourne.

The company will also be exhibiting at the Asian Attractions Expo in Singapore next week.

Nikolaeff concludes “we are turned our attention to Asia and the States as well as Australia wide because our products have proven to be great earners for our clients and we love building solid relationships with each of clients.”
