Football Federation SA to develop $26 million facility at Gepps Cross

Just weeks after announcing an $11.2 million overhaul of the Adelaide SuperDrome, the South Australian Government has revealed that it will fund a $26 million State Centre of Football on an adjacent site.

The Football Federation SA (FFSA) development, on 15 hectare of vacant land at the State Sports Park, will feature a 5.000-capacity stadium, four synthetic pitches, an indoor futsal complex and 10 outdoor five-a-side courts.

The new football hub will provide a venue for local club games, state development programs, and national and international tournaments, as well as school and community group use.

South Australian Treasurer Tom Koutsantonis said the centre would enhance Adelaide’s reputation as “the spiritual home of Australian football”, advising “it will enable the FFSA to develop the game at a community level while hosting national and international competitions.”

The complex will house a multicultural program aimed at educating young migrants through football and creating employment opportunities.

Its construction will also open up space for community football at Adelaide Shores and in the Adelaide Park Lands.

Treasurer Koutsantonis said the South Australian Government will provide $19 million toward the $26 million State Centre of Football, along with $7.7 million to redevelop the Superdrome, $2 million for a BMX training facility and $1 million to upgrade the State Hockey Centre.

The State Centre of Football will include:

• Three x synthetic pitches
• 1000 seat grandstand for main pitch
• Two x 200 seat grandstands for match pitches
• Administration buildings, media facilities and football museum
• Player and Referee Change Facilities and gymnasium
• Kiosk/cafe/bar facilities
• 10 x synthetic outdoor five-a-side pitches
• Three x multi-use indoor futsal pitches
• Lighting, landscaping, fencing

FFSA Chief Executive Michael Carter was thrilled with the ongoing support of the South Australian Government, advising “the State Government is committed to supporting the continued growth in Football and have supported our Football Facilities Development Plan.

“Establishing a State Centre for Football will open new opportunities for players, coaches and referees of all ages.”

FFSA will have to source $7 million for the facility which is estimated to be complete by 2020.
