Fitness Tariff Judgment Due on 17th May

The Copyright Tribunal has advised Fitness Australia that it will deliver judgment on the Phonographic Performance Company of Australia (PPCA)'s proposed revision to the Fitness Industry Tariff at 10.15am on 17 May 2010.

The judgment will be delivered in courtroom 18A, Law Courts Building, Queens Square, Sydney.

PPCA, the industry body representing the major record labels, has applied to the Copyright Tribunal for a massive 4,000% increase in the fees gyms and facilities pay to play original music in exercise classes.

Fitness centres currently pay a tariff of about 95c per class to provide gym users with popular tunes to move to.

Fitness Australia will continue to work with the industry's legal team at MinterEllison in order to provide advice as to when the revised PPCA Tariff V, as determined by the Tribunal, will come into effect within the fitness industry.

Fitness Australia and the Operation M.U.S.I.C Taskforce would like to thank all of the contributors to this important campaign for their support.

Fitness Australia is currently developing guidelines for the fitness industry on how businesses can continue to play music without the need to hold or maintain a PPCA licence.

These guidelines will be available free-of-charge to all contributors to the Operation M.U.S.I.C campaign at www.operationmusic.org.au
