Federal budget 2025/26 looks to back a more resilient economy

Federal Treasurer Jim Chalmers last night (Tuesday 25th March) delivered his fourth budget, laying out Government spending priorities 2025/26 - laying out five key priorities; helping with the cost-of-living, strengthening Medicare, building more homes, investing in every stage of education and making the economy stronger and more resilient.

Featuring a range of initiatives aimed at supporting small businesses, regional communities and tourism infrastructure, highlights are an increased investment in Indigenous and regional tourism initiatives along with measures such as improvements to accessibility, infrastructure investments and support for the tourism workforce.

While funding for Tourism Australia remains intact and regional aviation receives a boost, industry leaders say more needs to be done to address key challenges such as workforce shortages, airline competition and small business relief.

Commenting on the support for tourism, Australian Tourism Export Council (ATEC) Managing Director, Peter Shelley stated "securing consistent funding for Tourism Australia is essential for effectively promoting destination Australia, which is crucial for the industry's recovery and long-term growth.

“As the industry rebuilds in a changed global environment, businesses are adapting to more diverse markets and travellers which require not just strong marketing, but targeted support to compete and grow."

Australia’s 537 local governments have received an additional $316 million in direct funding in tonight’s Federal Budget, with $132 million for preventative health initiatives, including support for sporting facilities.

A 20% reduction of HELP/HECS debt to come into effect from 1st June this year will provide significant relief for those struggling under the burden of high debts from years of tertiary education required to establish their chosen career.

The 2025/26 budget has also backed the rebuilding of Australia’s media and arts sectors.
