Family Fun Day launches new name and new partnerships for Papatoetoe Sports Centre

The popular Papatoetoe Sports Centre has marked the changing of its name to Kolmar with a community fun day – held on Saturday 11th April.

Introducing the new brand, Justin Leydesdorff, General Manager of Papatoetoe Sports and Community Charitable Trust that manages the Sports Centre explains “the new name better reflects the diversity of the activities that happen here.

“We started off with mostly sports clubs but we now have Bridge, Girl Guides, Scouts, conferences and expos and even international events.

“We have gone from a sports hub to a real hub of the community and a venue for all of Auckland”

The name Kolmar is steeped in local history. The land bordered by Great South Road, Kolmar Road and St George Street in Papatoetoe was once one parcel of land and was purchased by the Friedlander brothers, who hailed from Germany, in 1904.

Jenny Clark from the Papatoetoe Historical Society added said “the German brothers came from a town called Colmar - now in France - and named the newly purchased land ‘Kolmar Estate’.

“We still have the original Deed of Sale.”

The Trust also used the fun day to formally welcome the Papatoetoe Rangers Netball Club, and announce a new partnership with Pasifika Mobile, Vodafone.

The Papatoetoe Rangers Netball club will become the 13th club to join the multi-sport Centre and has relocated from its old asphalt courts in Wallace Road, Papatoetoe to the Sports Centre where two synthetic, hard courts have recently been installed with assistance from the Otara-Papatoetoe Local Board.
