Energy Australia ends Swimming Australia sponsorship

Swimming Australia's ongoing troubles have now resulted in Energy Australia ending its five-year major sponsorship deal with sport governing body after just 18 months.

The electricity supplier's decisions comes follows the resignation of SA President Barclay Nettlefold following allegations of inappropriate behaviour.

The sponsorship is beleived to have been worth $2 million a year.

SA Chief Executive Mark Anderson confirmed Energy Australia's withdrawal on Wednesday evening, saying there are "no easy solutions" for the organisation.

A statement explained "this is obviously disappointing but we respect the decision.

"The sport of swimming has been rebuilding since London. There is much to do.

"We have made a number of cultural and governance changes but the events of the last few days have crystallised the need for further endemic organisational and cultural change."

Anderson said that the sport must continue to improve its culture in order to remain attractive to financial backers, adding "financial support from sponsors is important to the success of Australian swimming.

"But ultimate success in the pool is built upon hard work and a strong and stable supporting organisation.

"During this rebuilding phase, Swimming Australia is committed to ensuring that swimming returns quickly to where it belongs -at its rightful place as Australia's number one Olympic sport."
