Emerald Roller Girls get going
Roller Derby is to start in the cental Queensland town of Emerald as a result of a funding boost from the Queensland Government's 'Get in the Game' program.
Announcing a $7,125 grant for much needed equipment, Queensland Sport Minister Steve Dickson explained "the (Queensland) Government is providing help to thousands of Queenslanders by reducing the costs of club registrations and funding better equipment and infrastructure through our flagship 'Get in the Game' funding program.
"The initial response to the program from Queensland families and clubs was overwhelming, which is why we recently announced funding for Get in the Game would be tripled to $47 million over three years.
"Boosting this grassroots election commitment is another way the Newman Government is easing the cost of living burden for Queensland families."
Minister Dickson said the Emerald Roller Girls would be able to purchase equipment including new skates, helmets, knee and elbow pads, wrists guards and safety mats with their funding grant, adding "I have no doubt this new equipment will further increase the club's steadily rising membership numbers."
Emerald Roller Girls Treasurer Kelly Quinlan said the new equipment would make life much easier for the club.
Quinlan explained "previously, members or potential members who didn't own their own skates or equipment would have to travel to the Blackwater PCYC to use their equipment for training.
"Our new equipment will mean they no longer have to travel such a distance and this will hopefully make the club more appealing for people to join.
Minister Dickson said the Get Going component of Get in the Game had already helped more than 470 clubs throughout Queensland, concluding "round two of Get in the Game will open in the coming weeks with Get Started opening on 15th July, and Get Playing and Get Going opening on 15th August."
